Cover Products

In the production of clean steel, reactive slags play a particularly important role. They are intended to absorb non-metallic inclusions from the slag. At the same time, through good insulation properties, the slag can reduce the heat loss from the steel bath.

With the FOR MET product series, Weerulin has successfully optimized the interaction between grain size distribution, material gradient, and temperature to achieve a maximum melting rate and insulation capacity.

Reactive Layer

Calcium aluminate slag of the FOR MET type on the surface of the tundish provides optimal protection against re-oxidation through the fastest melting and sealing of the bath surface. When CaO reacts with Al2O3 at around 1550°C, no further binding heat is needed from the tundish; on the contrary, heat is released, which further accelerates the melting process.

Insulating Layer

Slag is often covered with carbon-containing rice husk ash. However, a disadvantage is the high SiO2 content (>90%). Due to the higher reduction potential at the slag-steel interface, there is a risk of non-metallic inclusions in the form of micro-aluminas. Therefore, we now rely on a combined single-layer cover:

Weerulin has developed the single-layer covering slag FOR MET L, which, in combination with a tundish lid, remains liquid throughout the entire sequence and fully fulfills all the positive properties of reactive covering: protection against re-oxidation, absorption of non-metallic inclusions, and insulation of the melt.
